Photocopy of two journals: (1) first journal (156 p.) contains notes of an expedition beyond the Rocky Mountains from St. Louis, Missouri (May 13, 1843) to the Boise River (October 14, 1843) for the purpose of exploring Oregon; describes flora, landscape, and Indian encounters; traveled under the command of Lieut. John C. Fremont; (2) second journal (1848-1852, 129 p.) kept by Talbot while part of U.S. Army 1st Artillery Regiment; included ocean voyage to the Pacific coast with military unit that assumed command of Fort Vancouver from the Hudson's Bay Company; also logged Talbot's trip to Alsea and Yaquina bays.
